Catalogue Note:
See The Wedgwood Museum archives, no. 15498-16, for a pair, recorded as shape No. 337, sold in June 1790. In addition, compare The Bernard & Lydia Starr example, illustrated in Diana Edward's article, 'Josiah Wedgwood's Jasper Initiative', Ars Ceramica, pub. July 2019, No. 31, p. 56, fig. 10; noting Josiah Wedgwood's correspondence of 1770 states that a model of, "'a single Triton... will allways [sic] take a man near two dates to begin & finish it', and six months later could make only three pairs a week in black basaltes." The Starr example sold, Sotheby's, New York, 23 October 2019, lot 143. Also reference, Robin Reilly, 'Wedgwood' Vol. I, color pl. C174, noting examples produced in caneware and bronzed basalt and Robin Reilly, 'Wedgwood Japer', color pl. C. 43 for the pair from the David & Charlotte Zeitlin Collection, and noting that Thomas Bentley described the form as after a model by Michelangelo (E25-18278 28 December 1769).
