Catalogue note:
Born in Tokyo, Pang Tseng Ying grew up in Peking, China, where he showed an early talent for brush calligraphy and painting. After studying at the Chunghua College of Art in Peking, Pang received a master's degree in art from Nippon University in Tokyo. Upon graduating, Pang returned to China, where he would teach art for the next 25 years. During this time, Pang exhibited his own work in Mainland China, Taiwan and Japan. In 1954, the National Association of Women Artists sponsored Pang's first show in the United States at the Argent Gallery in New York. Around this time, Pang began painting mainly in watercolor. He also received the high honor of the President's Award from the President of the Republic of China, Chiang-Kai-Shek. In 1966, Pang received a grant from the Asia Foundation that allowed him and his family to emigrate to the United States. His watercolors were exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum, the New Jersey State Museum and the Berkshire Museum (Massachusetts). In 1983, Pang was invited back to Taiwan for a retrospective show at the National Historical Museum of China, an honor that had previously only been extended to the Chinese-French painter Zou Wou-Ki.
