Catalogue note:
Born in Erie County, Pennsylvania, Phyllis Furdell moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1980. She practiced pastel painting for over twenty years, while also working as a professional project manager, researcher, and writer in the fields of economic development, urban poverty and workforce issues. Her "Metroscapes" series, depicting Washington, D.C.'s subway system, reflects her love of cities and background in urban issues. The series was exhibited in a 2004 solo exhibition at the Target Gallery in Alexandria, V.A., and received the National Arts Club Award for Exceptional Merit at the Pastel Society of America's 15th Annual Open Exhibition.
