A partial label for Richmond, Va., antiques dealer J.K. Beard (see photo) remains on the back of the cupboard. J.K. Beard, according to research, joined the trade in Richmond in 1908. He has been mentioned in The Magazine Antiques, the Chipstone Foundation website and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, which called him one of the "pioneering southern dealers [who] began to search out the region's furniture in the late 1920s" In addition, pieces with Beard provenance are found in Colonial Williamsburg. In a University of Delaware master's thesis on American Material Culture and the antiques trade in decorative arts of the old south, J.K. Beard is often mentioned.
  • Condition: Surface refinished. The pediment appears to be correct. The pediment has an old horizontal crack/split about 3" below the comb finial. There are several repaired cracks and separations to the upper molding on the pediment. The molded corner blocks of the cornice at the top of each side stile return have been re-glued, each with minor splitting and one with minor loss to the back end. Glazing in the upper doors replaced. The right (proper left ) waist molding on the side stile return has minor loss to the top. The paneled doors in the lower section each have a single age split, and the right door (proper left) has a complete split and repair/replacement of about 1" of the vertical member near the hinges, but not associated with the hinge screws. Each ogee bracket foot has horizontal splitting. The surface finish has areas of nail oxidation, minor wear, abrasions, scuffing and scratches, all consistent with age.
