Description:

ROBERT E. LEE FIGURAL AMERICAN GILT WOOD AND BRONZE YARN SWIFT mid-19th Century, with central cast shaft fitted with maple and cherry "umbrella" cage surmounted by a figure of probably Robert E. Lee, all raised on a gilt bronze open base of overlapping arrowroot leaves - h:24 in.

Provenance: Gilt bronze figure appears to be a provincial rendering of General Lee, perhaps after the illustration in Haper's Weekly by Frank Vizetelly in 1862, one of the few illustrations of the general drawn from life
