Catalogue note:
Robert Goodnough was an American Abstract Expressionist painter, considered the last of the original generation of the New York School. In 1946, Goodnough moved to Manhattan, where he studied at the Ozenfant School of Fine Arts and attended Hans Hofmann's summer school in Provincetown, Mass. In Provincetown, he met the artists Alfred Leslie and Larry Rivers and the art critic Clement Greenberg. At meetings of the Club, a famous downtown discussion group made up mostly of abstract painters, he became friends with Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko. Goodnough's work, influenced by Mondrian, Matisse and Synthetic Cubism, depicted patches and strokes of paint that suggested tumult and frenetic activity. In the early 1970s, the artist experimented with Color Field painting, usually executed in acrylic and oil, before returning to his earlier abstract expressionist style. *In 1948, the Junior Council of The Museum of Modern Art, led by Blanchette Rockefeller, began discussing the idea of creating an art lending library that would function as a forum to educate young collectors about modern art. The library would allow the public to rent works of art selected by a trustee advisory committee, in consultation with curators from the Museum. This early conception of an art lending library became the Art Lending Service (ALS) in 1951.

The Art Lending Service provided the public with the opportunity of renting a piece of art for a two-month period before deciding whether to purchase the work or return it to the ALS. The ALS took a small commission on each work sold, which was used to staff and underwrite the expenses of the ALS. (Source: MoMa Online).
