ROBERT GWATHMEY
NEW YORK, VIRGINIA, 1903-1988
SINGING AND MENDING
Screenprint in color
Upper left signed: gwathmey

Catalogue note:
Robert Gwathmey was an important social realist artist whose work was informed by Fauvism, Cubism, and early Modernism. Born in 1903, Gwathmey was an eighth-generation Virginian, who initially studied at the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore before entering the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1926. Gwathmey spent the summers of 1929 and 1930 in Europe and was exposed to Gothic art and architecture, including medieval stained glass which later influenced his art in the late 1930s-40s. The artist's mature style, characterized by simplified forms, tight composition, strong outlines, and patterning, was used to express his concerns for the living conditions and plight of African Americans in the rural South.
