Verso inscribed in Sharpie: artist, title, medium, size, year, and location; signed and dated

Robin Rose's monochromatic encaustic paintings can be found in some of Washington, D.C.'s most notable galleries and collections. Born in Florida in 1946, Rose studied the encaustic technique - which involves mixing pigment with hot wax - from modern master Karl Zerbe while a student at Florida State University. He relocated to the nation's capital in the 1970s, and has been a fixture in the local art scene ever since, citing the Washington Color School as one of his most vital influences. In a 2006 interview with Washingtonian, Rose said that "the covert is the great signifier of D.C.," and named this mysterious quality as inspiration for the intricate textures and hidden details he imbues in his paintings. Rose's work is frequently exhibited at the Hemphill Fine Arts gallery in Northwest D.C., and is included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Hirshhorn Museum and Phillip's Collection.
