Description:

ROYAL MADRID HISTORICAL TAPESTRY DEPICTING THE SPANISH LANDING IN ST. AUGUSTINE, 20TH CENTURY woven by the Real Fabrica de Tapices de Madrid (Royal Factory), the right selvedge woven with 'M' surmounted by a crown and a 'D' on the fold.

In 1565, on the behalf of King Philip of Spain, Admiral General Pedro Menendez de Aviles, along with his armed troops and a mission of priests, landed in La Florida. They arrived at the Timucuan village of Seloy and established the military outpost of San Agustin (S. Augustine). Menendez proclaimed the site for Spain and the Church. Accompanying Menendez was Father Martin Francisco Lopez de Mendosa Grajales, who first celebrated mass on the site Menendez called the Nombre de Dios.

The central figure (Menendez) is mounted on a majestic white horse in full armor with a vermillion sash. He is flanked on either side by conquistadors and two priests.

To Menendez's left is a second dragoon, carrying a flag with a golden crown in his right hand. To his right, a third conquistador kneels, holding the shield of Castile and Leon. A company of infantry carrying halberds stands behind Menendez on the beach. The famous galleon, the San Pelayo, of the Armada de la Carrera, is anchored offshore on the Atlantic Ocean.

Father Lopez stands with his arms outstretched towards a group of attentive native men. The Timucuan, wearing headbands and loincloths, sit cross-legged in the foreground. Another priest holds a warrior still carrying his spear, collapsed in his arms. In the distance, two native women stand with a child in a thatched hut beneath tropical palms - approximately 8ft. 6in. x 6ft. 3in.
