Description:

SANDY HOOK (GEORGES TABOUREAU)
FRENCH, 1879-1960
YOU ASK ME THAT?
India ink, traces of blue crayon on laid paper
Lower right signed: Sandy Hook; inscribed below image: Tu me demandes ça! Tu sais bien qu'une femme désintéressée c'est toujours au moins 5 louis.

Catalogue note: Georges Taboureau, who painted under the pseudonym "Sandy-Hook," is best known as a marine artist, producing posters and illustrations for various shipping lines and exhibiting frequently at the Musée de la Marine in Paris until 1953. Named the official painter of the French Admiralty in 1917, he contributed illustrations to the Journal de la Marine Marchande and was honored with a retrospective at Le Salon du Livre Maritime in Concarneau in 1998. This drawing is likely an early work intended for publication, with a caption that humorously hints at the price of a woman's virtue—"a louis" being a French gold coin worth 20 francs—leaving its full meaning to the viewer's imagination.
