SET OF SIX WARD BENNETT FOR BRICKEL ASSOCIATES "CONNAUGHT" CHERRY DINING CHAIRS the graceful hand carved cherry frames with scrolling details and black leather upholstery, the undersides of seats with tags reading Ward Bennett Designs for Brickel Associates along with Brickel Associates tags. An elegant and classic design that will complement any interior. Ward Bennett (American, 1917-2003) began a long professional relationship with Brickel Associates in 1964. Bennett's father was a vaudeville actor and he spent his youth traveling around the country with his father's vaudeville postings before he left home at age 13. Bennett started working in New York's Garment District as a teenager and then joined the staff of designer Hattie Carnegie. Bennett moved to Europe to train as a designer and studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière with renowned sculptor Constantin Brancusi. Upon his return to America Bennett lived in California and then New York where he worked as a fashion artist and window dresser, shared a studio with the artist Louise Nevelson, and continued his training by studying with the painter Hans Hofmann. Bennett's career began to grow as his ceramics were exhibited at the Whitney Museum and his jewelry designs were shown at the Museum of Modern Art. In the 1940s he also began designing interiors where he eventually became known for his signature "sensual minimalism." In addition to designing a wide variety of jewelry, fashion, and decorative arts items for a range of companies including Tiffany & Co. and Gianni Agnelli, Bennett designed over 100 chairs in the course of his career. A quote by Bennett published on the Herman Miller website states "Rather covertly, I love to watch people respond to my furniture — sitting in a new chair for instance. Usually, because they know I'm the designer, they'll compliment me on its beauty, which is gratifying in itself, of course. But the real compliment is to watch them, perhaps unconsciously, trace the flow of the arm with their fingers, or caress the curve of the upholstery. I love to see people sit or lounge in my chairs, even throw a leg up over the arm." A fascinating and colorful oral history interview with Bennett is part of the Smithsonian Archives of American Art and is available online at http://www.aaa.si.edu/collections/interviews/oral-history-interview-ward-bennett-12352 - h:32 in.
