SEVRES HARD-PASTE BISCUIT PORCELAIN FIGURE OF THE ACTOR VOLANGE AS JANOT dated S. 1921 DN, incised LS, the design attributed to Le Riche of circa 1780, modeled standing gazing upwards, wearing a cap and poorly fitting peasant clothes, holding a lantern in his right hand, on a circular base - h:12.75 in.

Literature: Josse-Francois-Joseph Le Riche, (1741-1812), was Head of the Sculpture Studio at Sevres, 'chef des sculpteurs', from 1775 to 1801. Volange was an 18th century actor, who became famous for his comic role as Janot in the play by Dorvigny, 'Janot ou les Battus paient l'amende'.
