Vallauris is a Mediterranean town in Provence, France, which is well known for majolica style pottery. The use of a cicada as an emblem of Provence was popularized in 1895 by Louis and Francois Sicard. The design was in vogue until the 1930s and then fell out of favor when first Louis and then Francois died. The style revived in popularity in the 1950's when amongst other makers Jacques Sicard made items in this style.
