Brahany; together with a dinner program signed in crayon :For Tom Brahany / The ALFALFA President - Best of luck for your entire administration / Dwight D. Eisenhower / 22 January 1955

Catalogue note:
Thomas W. Brahany was a former reporter for the Milwaukee Sentinel who became assistant secretary to President William H. Taft in 1912 and continued in that position in the administration of Woodrow Wilson. He was honored with membership in the Gridiron Club as a Limited Member since he was no longer a working journalist and participated in the club's satirical musical sketches of Washington politics at its annual dinner. Brahany's jovial Irish demeanor while discharging his White House duties was recounted in a 1914 article in the Wood County Reporter (Grand Rapids, WI): "When you come to Washington do not miss this gentleman...Mr. Brahany is part of the president's open door policy...Mr. Brahany is an Irishman. You will be inclined to suspect this the moment you hear him speak. At the same time you will be delighted. Everybody is. For when you see Tommy Brahany you will stand in the presence of the highest development of the art of the glad hand in the civilized world. Nobody can be cross or fretful or impatient while talking to the president's chief clerk. He has the kindest face, the brightest smile, the most appealing clear blue eyes Ireland ever turned out; and how he can talk. He is a human gatling gun loaded with language and he never discharged a word in his life that would not sweeten honey. He does not look old enough to be married, but he is."
