SPANISH COLONIAL POLYCHROME AND GILTWOOD FIGURE OF A MALE SAINT, 17TH/ EARLY 18TH CENTURY
the standing saint holds an open book painted with "Miserere Mei, Deus..." (Have mercy on me, oh God- from Psalm 51), he base with worn painted inscription ...CIRON...? carved from a single trunk of wood, the figure well carved and richly robed, the surface decorated with brightly colored gesso and gold leaf (estafado), with extensive areas of wear exposing the wood beneath. A halo, is now missing (as indicated by a hole at the crown) in original condition with original paint, minor losses, cracks and losses wear to paint

Provenance:
Discovered on a refuse heap during or shortly after the Portuguese Revolution (1974–1975); acquired from an antique dealer, Lisbon, in 1982; subsequently in the collection of a former American diplomat.
