STONE FIGURE OF 'L'ARCHITECTURE', BY JOSEPH CSAKY (1888-1971), CIRCA 1926 signed 'CSAKY', old repairs; Joseph Csaky was a Hungarian avant-garde artist best known to be an early participant in the Cubist movement. He was after Archipenko, the first sculptor to join the Cubists. In 1911, he exhibited his Cubist sculptures at the Salon des Independants with artists including Archipenko, Duchamp, Gleizes, Laurencin, Leger and Picabia. Csaky fought for the French during World War I and befriended fellow sculptor Jean Lambert-Rucki. After 1928, he moved away from Cubism to a more representational style. He exhibited widely across Europe throughout his lifetime. His work can be found in the collection of many museums and private collections, including a number of pieces in both the Musee National d'Art Moderne (Centre Georges Pompidou) and the Kroller-Muller Museum in the Netherlands. -
