SUSAN LEVIN (AMERICAN, 21ST CENTURY)
POCKETS OF LIGHT
Oil on canvas: 15 x 45 in.
Signed on back stretcher, titled on back of work, circa 2009-2010. Susan Levin is a contemporary artist whose portfolio is displayed at http://artbysusanlevin.com/ Her artist's statement reads: "As a child, one of my first pieces of art was a picture of Renoir's 'Girl with the Watering Can.' I was drawn to this piece because it inspired me and I wanted to have her near me. To this day, the little girl remains in my studio because she provokes my emotions. Similarly, I hope that my art allows people to experience their feelings.

As both an abstract painter and digital photographer, creating art is a form of play and design that often is inspired by what lies before me. The combination of being aware of my emotions and having the ability to clarify them through art is what brings meaning to each piece. My art and emotions are symbiotic - my emotions influence my art and my art influences my emotions. The process is about allowing these feelings to surface and to be expressed.

As a child, this freedom was not taught to me. I took a painting class with a strong-willed teacher who held my hands and forced me to paint in a strict and conventional manner. I disdained that feeling and did not pick up a paintbrush for more than 20 years. I began again as a strict knife painter, and while I still use many different types of blades, I also use various brushes. I am drawn to the textures and the scratches that all of these tools afford me.

My other visual medium has always been a hobby. During my travels, I found myself taking pictures of alleys, windows, and doors throughout the world. I enjoyed using the camera to magnify small images. I, therefore, decided several years ago to start reinterpreting these images in an abstract form through the use of software tools.

With both mediums, my creativity is inspired by experiences - a person's action, an outdoor scene, or a dream. My desire is to take my viewers and myself on a journey. I have found while painting or manipulating photographs that both my hands and my imagination transform my initial idea. I thoroughly enjoy this exercise of allowing myself to explore these opportunities not knowing where each piece will end. Likewise, I appreciate the conversations that my artwork generates - to see how people interpret the same piece of art so differently and where it leads them. "
