Catalogue note:
Born in Brooklyn, Ted Gilien studied art at the National Academy School. He started his career painting murals on public buildings for the Works Project Administration, before embarking on a brief stint as a set designer in Los Angeles. During World War II, Gilien was a sergeant with a combat artists' unit in the South Pacific. His series of religious paintings were inspired by the Jewish history of the Maccabees' fight for freedom. In a review of his 1954 exhibition of these works at the Associated American Artists Gallery, the New York Times described Gilien as "a highly adept wielder of the brush" with "powerful imagination."
