THREE DOULTON LAMBETH STONEWARE 'MOTTO' JUGS each saltglaze with brown line rims, including a Bartmann jug, circa 1875, impressed cogwheel mark and incised potter's initials EL and impressed hh, of pear shape with loop handle, in the Bellarmine tradition, the front molded with a bearded mask, above a band inscribed, 'FILL WHAT YOU WILL AND DRINK WHAT YOU FILL', the lower body applied with stiff-leaf tips, h: 7 in.; and two graduated jugs, one, impressed uppercase mark and numbered 6442, potter's initial K and incised DN, inscribed, 'HE THAT BUYS LAND BUYS STONES / HE THAT BUYS FLESH BUYS BONES/ HE THAT BUYS EGGS BUYS MANY SHELLS / HE THAT BUYS GOOD ALE BUYS NOTHING ELSE', h: 8 in.; the other, 1891-1902, impressed roundel mark, numbered 4422 and potter's initials nn, oviform, with high loop handle, the body applied with four classic medallions and inscribed with the verse, 'FOR EVERY ILL BENEATH THE SUN/ THERE IS A REMEDY OF NONE / IF THERE BE ONE THEN TRY AND FIND IT / IF THERE BE NONE THEN NEVER MIND IT', h: 6.5 in.
