Catalogue Note:
When Saint Andrew was sentenced to death by the Romans in Greece by crucifixion, he asked that the cross be on a diagonal, as he felt unworthy to die on the same shape of cross as Jesus. The Saint Andrew's Cross in heraldry is known as a saltire and is recognized today as the national flag of Scotland. For the corresponding wax and glass model of the medallion see, The Victoria & Albert Museum accession no. WE.7080-2014.

For a set of buttons including an example similar to the present, see 'The 13th Wedgwood International Seminar', Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC, April 1968, p. 207, fig. 11. Here the author also transcribes a letter from William Hamilton of the 23rd of May 1786, thanking Bentley for sending him his 'new buttons' and remarking on their tasteful simple elegance.
