TOVE JOHANSEN (DENMARK, 1932-2009), 22K GILT DECORATIVE PLATE
the thickly potted plate with hand painted flowers in 22K gold, painted decorative mark to underside

Catalogue note:
Danish ceramicist Tove Birgitte Johansen (1932-2009) studied and later taught in Buenos Aires at the Escuela Nacioinal de Ceramica, and collaborated with Spanish ceramicist Fernando Arranz. After receiving an award in 1956, she began an outstanding career as a ceramic artist and is considered one of the best in Argentina. Museums and organizations with her work include the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Pomona Ceramic Museum, the Tile Heritage Foundation, the Decorative Arts Museum in Madrid and the National Museum of Ceramics in Valencia, which plans a special exhibit next year on women ceramicists, including Tove.

In Buenos Aires she created decorative pieces for Knoll Interior Designs; murals for condos, and, in collaboration with various painters, large murals for the San Patricio Sanatorium in Buenos Aires, underground metro stations in the capital, the Atucha Atomic Power Plant in Santa Fe and the Campana Cathedral.

She moved to the U.S. in 1980, where she created murals for Blair High School, Gaithersburg Junior High School, Quince Orchard High School and Northwood High School, all in Maryland. Johansen continued making decorative pieces for collectors, and her work has been shown in exhibitions. She was also mentioned in an article in the Washington Times on tile work.

The lots in the April 2025 auction came from Johansen's personal collection, which the family is beginning to sell.
