Description:

TWO CHINESE EXPORT FAMILLE ROSE BOTANICAL DISHES, QING DYNASTY (18TH CENTURY) decorated with arms of Chambers impaling Wilton, the central well decorated with a large flowering branch with pink blossoms, to one side blue and purple flowers on a green stem, the border with a wavy green band encircling gilt flowerheads, dia: 9 in (2)

Provenance: Sir Robert Chambers (1737 - 1803) Vinerian professor of English law, was appointed a puisne judge in the Supreme Court of Calcutta in 1733, and became Chief Justice after the retirement of Sir Elijah Impey. His honour and professional integrity were never in doubt, and as a result he was asked, from time to time, to act as arbitrator in disputes between local princes,

The dinner service was a gift from one of the parties following a border dispute on the borders of Tibet. The other party being equally satisfied with the result, presented Sir Robert with a pair of valuable oriental vases that still remain in the family.

Shortly before leaving for India, Sir Robert Chambers married Frances Wilton, the fifteen-year-old daughter of sculptor Joseph WIlton who was the first keeper of the Royal Academy and a close friend of Sir Joshua Reynolds.

Literature: Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol. !, page 666, #T 12
Howard described the arms as "Gules a chevron or between three cinquefoils argent. The crest as: bear passant chained. The impaled coat is Gules on a chevron per pale or and argent three crosses crosslet fitched sable for Wilton of Snaresbrook in Essex granted in 1768."
