Description:

TWO MANUSCRIPT LETTERS ABOUT THE BURIAL OF CIVIL WAR COL. ULRIC DAHLGREN'S LEG AT THE WASHINGTON NAVY YARD two manuscript letters dated 1878 concerning the fate of Civil War Col. Ulric Dahlgren's leg, which was amputated after he was wounded at Gettysburg. The leg was buried in 1863 with full military honors in the wall of the Foundry Building at the Washington Navy Yard. First letter of correspondence on lined paper signed by John W. Thompson, in charge of the Naval Laboratory, dated April 6, 1878, to Rear Admiral J.J. (John Jay) Almy. Thompson references a discussion that Brooks Burr, servant of Ulric Dahlgren, had with Admiral John Dahlgren, the father of Ulric and founder of the Navy's Ordnance Department. The letter notes the Admiral was unhappy that his son's leg was interred in the foundry wall and that it was done against his wishes. Second letter on folded lined paper is a Memoranda in regards to the depositing the leg of Col. Ulrick [sic] Dahlgren's under the South-East corner of the wall... of the Navy Yard foundry building, obtained from persons who know about it - taken April, 1878. The document is a deposition from four men who were witness to the events, including the death in 1864 death of Ulric and his father's attempts to remove the leg for re-interment at the family plot. A plaque commemorating Col. Ulric and the circumstances surrounding his leg remains on the Navy Yard foundry building. (2)
