TWO WELLER ART POTTERY 'SICARD' BUD VASES / JACQUES SICARD Zanesville, OH, 1902-1907, both inscribed on the side 'Weller' and 'SICARD' for the designer Jacques Sicard (French, 1865-1923), including a three-sided oviform vase decorated with swirling iridescent foliage in shades of ruby, jade and sapphire; and a swelling tapering cylindrical vase, painted in green with pendant vine on an iridescent turquoise and jade ground, h: 5 in. Provenance: Estate of Ronald Sperling

Literature: At the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889-1900, Clement Massier won a gold medal and his celebrated 'faience a reflets metalliques' became a new marvel. To create a competitive iridescent line, Weller hired Massier ceramic artisans, Jacques Sicard, and his assistant Henri Gellie on a five-year contract. At the St. Louis 1904 Exposition, the Weller Sicard line won a gold medal. To the consternation of Weller, Sicard formulated his costly glazes behind closed doors and when their contract expired, most of their secrets returned to France.
