Transcript: Ulysses S. Grant,/President of the United States of America,/To all to whom these Presents may come, Greet:/Whereas, on the 3rd day of October, 1871, in the United States circuit court for the District of North Carolina one William C. Depriest was convicted of conspiracy, and was sentenced to be imprisoned for two years, and to pay a fine of one hundred dollars; and/Whereas his pardon is recommended by Senators Merrimon and Ransom, - Hon. John Pool, Hon. Joseph G. Abbott and others./

Now, therefore, be it known, that I, Ulysses S. Grant, President of the United States of America, in consideration of the premises, divers other good and sufficient reasons me thereunto moving do hereby grant to the said William C. Depriest a full and unconditional pardon./

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name and caused the seal of the United States to be-affixed/

Done at the City of Washington, this twenty-first day of March, A.D. 1873, and of the Independence of the United States the ninety seventh/

Catalogue note:
William Canselor DePriest (1818-1897) was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina and worked as a miller. As a member of the Klu Klux Klan, he was convicted for the crime of conspiracy in federal court, said to be related to a horse rustling raid. Later, in 1873, President Grant granted him this pardon.
