Description:

US GWYN & CAMPBELL TYPE II BREECH LOADING CARBINE
Civil war era breech loading percussion carbine manufactured by Edward Gwyn and Abner C. Campbell in Hamilton, Ohio. Around 4000 of the type II carbine's were made for the Union Army between late 1863 and 1864 and used primarily in the midwestern theater. The hammer, finger lever and finger lever safety, and rear sight are all in the style of the type II version of the carbine. "Gwyn & Campbell, Patent 1863, Hamilton, O" engraved on the right side of the lock plate. "Union Rifle" engraved on the right side of the frame. Boxed script "RKA" and "WHR" cartouches on the left side of the wrist. "WHR" inspection initials also on the top of the stock close to the buttplate tang. Matching serial numbers (2796) in barrel, frame, breech block, and lever. Rear sight intact, with markings up to 600 yards, and slide slight still attached.

Cavalry carbine sling swivel attached to the sling bar on the carbine. Swivel marked "U.S. T.J, Shepard" (known Union army inspector) and "E. Gaylord, Chicopee, Mass" (owner of leather and accouterments division of 'Ames Co,' an arms and accouterments manufacturer for the Union during the US Civil War.
