US M1936 PHILLIPS SADDLE, OWNED BY GRACE KELLY'S RIDING INSTRUCTOR
saddle owned by Fred Birkner, who taught then actress and future princess, Grace Kelly, how to ride side saddle for her 1956 movie, 'The Swan.' Grace Kelly was pictured numerous times in Central Park next to instructor Fred Birkner, who may have been riding this saddle in the photos(see photos below). The saddle itself is a M1936 Phillips saddle, probably used by Fred Birkner during his military service (pommel bags marked 1941). Back of saddle has a name plate reading 'F.E. Birkner, 1st LT. Cav. ORO.' Saddle accompanied by one pommel bag, marked 'US, W.H. Co. 1941' and saddle bags marked 'US' on each side and stamped 'Rock Island Arsenal.'
