Catalogue note:
It is possible that the view of Pennsylvania Avenue is by the noted hotel architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh. In 1897, Hardenbergh was commissioned by the hotel owner's son, Joseph Willard, to replace the previous Willard Hotel (Pennsylvania Ave. and 14th St.) constructed in 1833. The construction of the Willard Hotel lasted from 1900/1901. Hardenbergh was also commissioned to design the nearby Raleigh Hotel (Pennsylvania Ave. and 12th St.) in 1910/11.
