Catalogue Note:
See the Burrell Collection, Glasgow, for the Antique Roman marble vase. Excavated by the antiquarian Gavin Hamilton from Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli, circa 1771, the fragments were sold to Sir William Hamilton, the British envoy to the court of Naples. He restored the work and gifted it to his nephew George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick, who displayed the eponymous work at Warwick Castle.
