WEDGWOOD BLACK DIP JASPERWARE CIRCULAR PORTRAIT PLAQUE OF 'CLEOPATRA' late 19th/early 20th Century, impressed uppercase mark and BB 852, for the modeler Bert Bentley, based on a portrait attributed to William Hackwood, circa 1775, the roundel applied in white with a half-length decollete relief of the Egyptian Queen, to sinister, her left arm entwined with an asp ready to strike, within a beaded surround, identified on the reverse, dia: 6 3/4 in., within a modern giltwood frame

Bert Bentley (1878-1937) joined the Wedgwood, Etruria Works, Barlaston in 1891. Trained as both a modeler and an ornamentor, he is noted as a craftsman of exceptional skill.
