Catalogue note:
Designed after the Antique Alexandrian cased glass amphora, circa A.D. 50, now in the British Museum. This iconic form was first excavated in Rome in 1580 and remained in the Barberini Palace for two centuries before being moved to England, where the Duke of Portland purchased it. In 1786, he lent it to Josiah Wedgwood, and approximately four years later Wedgwood produced the first jasperware examples. For a similar example, see The Milkins Collection, Potomack, Alexandria, VA, 30 September 2021, lot 2130 and another at Skinner, Boston, 12 July 2008, sale 2417, lot 85A.
