WEDGWOOD GREEN, LILAC AND SOLID WHITE TRICOLOR JASPERWARE TWO-HANDLED LARGE VASE AND COVER OF 'THE DANCING HOURS' 20th Century, impressed uppercase mark, the ornamentation designed by John Flaxman, Jr., of baluster form, the shoulder flanked by loop handles with bearded mask terminals, the conical cover with lilac spire finial radiating stiff leaf-tips, the central register applied in white high-relief with eight dancing Muses reserved on green, the white socle and square plinth with green and lilac classical ornamentation, h: 21 3/4 in.

Catalogue Note:
The iconic Wedgwood subject, 'The Dancing Hours' depicts the Horae, the Greek goddesses of Time, who personify of the twelve hours of the day. The design is based on a Roman Neo-Attic style white marble frieze, formerly in the Palazzo Borghese, Rome, now in the Louvre, Paris. For a vase of this form, dated 1800-1830, see The Victoria & Albert Museum, accession no. 451-1890.
