WEDGWOOD QUEENSWARE, POSSIBLY ROYAL COMMEMORATIVE ELEPHANT AND MAHOUT JAR AND SILVERPLATED COVER date code BLG for 1878, impressed uppercase mark, N and M, the cover stamped 2, recorded as model number F777, the biscuit jar modeled as a Mahout riding a bejeweled Indian elephant, trimmed in brown enamel and enriched in gilt, the saddle blanket molded with an elephant and howdah, silverplated rim and cover, h: 7 1/2 x l: 9 1/2 in.

Catalogue Note:
This piece commemorates the Royal visit to India by the Prince of Wales (later to be King Edward VII). Aimed at strengthening the ties between the two countries, Albert Edward Prince of Wales, the eldest son of Queen Victoria, first embarked on a tour of Indian in 1875-76 visiting more than 21 towns and cities on the subcontinent. See the Royal Collection Trust, for an image of His Royal Highness standing before a kneeling elephant with attendants and mahout.
