Catalogue Note:
Reference the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession no. 27914:3, for an engraving of the basic form by the Austrian Architect Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach. Published in 1721 in 'Entwurff Einer Historischen Architectur', plate 3, part 5, the form was once thought to be after an Egyptian relic. Though inspired by the archeological examples, the shape is actually designed by Fischer von Erlach himself. The print identified as 'L'Immortalite de l'Ame' was the design source for the Wedgwood model. Further details for the applied reliefs were adapted from Bernard de Montfaucon's, 'L'Antiquite Expliquee'. For a similar example with variant cover at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum Bournemouth, see, Hillary Young, 'The Genius of Wedgwood', p. 111, no. E30, accession no. BORGM 8186. For a biscuit example without cover, see the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession no. WE.2494-2014.
