Description:

WEDGWOOD SAGE-GREEN JASPERWARE OVAL PORTRAIT MEDALLION OF SIR FREDERICK WILLIAM HERSCHEL (1738-1822) early 19th Century, impressed uppercase mark, after a model by John Flaxman, applied in white relief with a shoulder-length profile, to dexter, circa 1783, depicted with tied coif, jacket and cravat, identified below, 'DR. W. HERSCHEL 1783,' h: 8 1/2 in., framed

Provenance: Jeffrey Milkins Collection, no. 278.

Catalogue Note:
Dr. W. Herschel was a composer and an astronomer. In 1781, after constructing his own large reflecting telescope, he discovered the planet Uranus and was subsequently appointed private astronomer to George III. In his observations, he frequently collaborated with his fellow astronomer and younger sister, Caroline Lucretia Herschel. Also, his son John became a recognized 19th Century astronomer. For two related jasperware examples, see Robin Reilly and George Savage, 'Wedgwood, the Portrait Medallions', p. 191-192. Observe that a version of the medallion was designed with the orbiting planets Saturn and Uranus at the upper right.
