WELLER ART POTTERY LARGE 'LOUWELSA' AUTUMN OAK AND ACORN VASE Zanesville, OH, 1896-1924, impressed small uppercase mark, model no. x500, incised LB monogram, oviform with flaring trumpet mouth, painted with a branch of oak leaves and acorns, high gloss glazes in shades of russet brown, sienna, amber, golden yellow, olive green and burnt orange - h:18.50 in.

Provenance: Estate of Ronald Sperling

Literature: For a signed example painted with fruiting autumnal oak by Sarah Reid McLaughlin, see Worth Point, ref. no. 1790118391. The 'Louwelsa' line is an anagram named after Samuel A. Weller's oldest daughter Louise and himself. With the merger of Lonhuda pottery and the subsequent departure of William A. Long in 1895, the line was renamed shortly after Louise was born, in 1896. The technique was originally invented and patented by Laura Fry at Rookwood and traveled with her to Lonhuda.
