WELLER RHEAD FAIENCE ART POTTERY 'JAP BIRDIMAL' VASE, A WELLER 'WHITE HUDSON' VASE AND TWO WELLER 'CLAYWOOD' VASES/FREDERICK HURTEN RHEAD Zanesville, OH, all four vases in the Japonisme taste, the first vase, circa 1904, impressed 8, X, and 11, designed by Frederick Hurten Rhead, ovoid polychrome slip-decorated with a Geisha musician playing a shamisen and wearing a broad hat and floral kimono, on a burnt sienna ground; the second vase of tapering hexagonal form, 1927-1936, impressed WELLER mark, with rolled black rim, painted with a branch of cherry blossoms, matte crackle ivory ground, h: 10.5 in.; the third and fourth vases, circa 1910, molded with mons and other flowers within seeded panels, framed in dark brown (4)

Literature: Frederick Hurten Rhead (1880-1942), was a ceramicist, designer, author and prominent leader in the Arts & Crafts movement. He worked with Weller for only a short time in 1904 before moving onto Roseville Pottery.
