WELLER RHEAD FAIENCE ART POTTERY MOTTO TANKARD / HATTIE ROSS / FREDERICK HURTEN RHEAD Zanesville, OH, circa 1904, white slip trailed decorator's HR monogram to the side, impressed x, model no. 562, designed by Frederick Hurten Rhead, of tapering cylindrical form with loop handle, decorated in the British Arts & Crafts tradition with the proverb 'A Drop in The Cup is Worth / Two in The Cellar.', the capital letters framed and picked out with further squeeze-bag slip trailed decoration, high gloss grey-blue glaze, h: 5.25 in.

Literature: The HR monogram at the lower right on this mug has previously been attributed to the decorator Hattie K. Ross. It may more directly represent the design work of Frederick Hurten Rhead.
