Catalogue note:
In 1950, seventeen-year-old Willem de Looper moved from his native Holland to the United States. In 1959, he began working at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., as a guard, working his way up to becoming a curator in 1982. During this time, he pursued an artistic career, studying artwork by Paul Klee, John Marin and Arthur Dove amongst others. He was influenced by the burgeoning Washington Color School movement, incorporating their new methods of rolling, pouring and staining into his own works. In 1966, De Looper had his first solo exhibition at the Jefferson Place Gallery, Washington, D.C. His works can be seen at The National Gallery of Art as well as The Phillips Collection.
