Note: "Ascent to the Capitol" was made on Bartlett's first trip to the United States, one of four made between 1836 and 1852. He was sent by London publisher George Virtue to make wash drawings for Nathaniel Parker Willis's "American Scenery," 1840. This drawing appears on the title page of Volume 1 of the bound copy and it was one of five published drawings of Washington, D.C., done on this trip.
