Description:

Framed; lower left: Wm. Pinchback del; lower right dated 1803; possibly formerly the top to a mirror

Note: The panel features two gilded allegorical figures of Hope and
Plenty, standing in a diapered field of white and black, and flanking a central
cartouche with a pastoral scene. The scene consists of a pair of horses pulling a
yeoman in a cart, the background filled with a row of Lombardy Poplars. The
figures and landscape are executed in gilding and the sky is painted orange. The
scene is reminiscent of many eighteenth-century English genre paintings;
perhaps the artist received training in the fine arts or simply adapted the image
from a print.
The panel is marked “Wm. Pinchbeck Delt.” and “1803.” William Frederick
Pinchbeck was born in London, a great-grandson of Christopher Pinchbeck
(1670-1732), the patriarch of “the famous family of showmen and builders of
automata and clocks.”

  • Medium: Eglomise, with silver and gilded details: 8 1/4 x 18 3/4 in.
