Catalogue note: William Rudolf O'Donovan was a self-taught sculptor born in Preston County, Virginia. In 1861 O'Donovan joined the Confederate Army and served until the end of the Civil War. By 1871 he had moved to New York City where he worked as a sculptor. His works include a sculpture of Thomas Eakins located at the National Academy, busts of Walt Whitman and General Joseph Wheeler, and equestrian statues of Lincoln and Grant for Soldiers' and Sailors' Arch in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. O'Donovan was a founding member of the Title Club.
