Catalogue note: William Seltzer Rice was an important woodblock print artist associated with the Arts and Crafts movement in Northern California. He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and studied art at Drexel University under Howard Pyle and the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art. In the early 1900s, Rice moved to California, where he taught art in the Stockton, Alameda, and Oakland schools and evening art classes at the University of California, Berkeley. He explored scenic California, visiting Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe, and the Spanish missions, and became active in the Arts and Crafts movement, joining the Berkeley Art Colony and contributing to the Colony's Exhibition of California Artists. In 1915, having seen the Japanese woodblock prints exhibited at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, Rice decided to specialize in woodblock printing. He had his first major exhibition at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco in 1918. His work was sold at the Gump's department store in San Francisco and was included in the 1939 New York World's Fair.
