  • Provenance:
Family research document this Winchester Model 1866 belonged to John (Jack)
Yeoman Thornton who carried the rifle as a posse member chasing Billy the Kid.
According to author Jack Nolan, Billy the Kid Reader, in the chapter titled Five
Days of Battle, page 271 John Thornton is listed as part of a group of 26-28 men
chasing Billy the Kid. Family biographical research states "Pat Garrett subpoenaed
Johnnie Hurley to get a posse and look for him. My father, Jack Thornton, who
came to New Mexico in 1875 as a soldier, later Indian fighter against Geronimo,
and at this time bookkeeper for James J. Dolan's store, was one of the nine men in
this posse." Thornton, born in Danville, PA on January 26, 1856, leaving PA at the
age of 19 and enlisted in the Army on October 8, 1875 in Baltimore MD and was
discharged on October 7, 1880 at Fort Stanton, New Mexico. Thornton, in addition
to the Billy the Kid connection was part of the Geronimo campaign. Thornton later
moved from Lincoln, NM to Roswell, NM when Roswell became a more
important town. After George Curry became Governor of the New Mexico
Territory in 1907, Thornton served under him as coal oil inspector at a time when
coal oil was a very important commodity. He was a charter member of the Knights
of Pythias as well as the Elks Club.

Winchester Model 1866 Line of Decent
Purchased by Jack Yeoman Thornton (1856-1919)
to Nellie Leahy Thornton (wife) (1859-1951)
to Raynes Valentine West (son died in 1975)
to Raynes Thornton West (grandson, 1920-2008) or Donald Valentine West
    (grandson, 1931-2024)
    to Donald Valentine West
  • Condition: The overall condition of the Winchester Model 1866 is fair to poor. It has been
stored unused and unprotected over many years. The action moves easily although
it needs to be oiled, the brass receiver with old patina, the stock and forend, with
much finish loss chipping and scratches, several receiver screws are missing, the
outside of the barrel is lightly pitted (see images) and marred with loss of bluing.
The roll marks are now barely visible on the top of the barrel. The bore is dry with
    an accumulation of dust.
Given the connection to the hunt for Billy the Kid, this historical Winchester
Model 1866 would be a fine candidate for restoration.
