signed 'R. Tait McKenzie', with a decorative inscription around the base, plaster painted to resemble bronze, with a wooden base

Note:
Robert Tait McKenzie was a true Renaissance man. Born and educated in Canada, he was a soldier, an athlete, a surgeon, teacher, writer and sculptor. He graduated from McGill University and served on the McGill Medical School faculty from 1891 to 1904, when he left to join the University of Pennsylvania faculty as head of the new Department of Physical Education (1904-1931).

'The Boy Scout' is his most famous work. Dr. McKenzie sat on the executive board of the Boy Scouts organization and was asked to create a sculpture of "the ideal scout". He chose several young scouts to model in uniform. In 1915, Mckenzie gave his small original bronze model to the Philadelphia Council. There were ten additional bronze copies created which were given to benefactors who had contributed $100 towards the molding and the casting of the figure. Starting in 1917 until around 1934, a limited number of plaster versions were cast in various finishes, including bronze and ivory.

The original life-size statue was unveiled in front of the Philadelphia Council headquarters in 1937, and it remained there until 2013. At least 18 additional statues of 'The Boy Scout' were cast over the years and appear in locations all over the United States, and one in London.
