Note:
Samuel A. Murray was an American sculptor and educator, but he is best known as a protege of Thomas Eakins. He studied under Eakins at the Art Students' League of Philadelphia and was a favored student who later became his assistant and an instructor. The two artists shared a studio from 1892 to 1900 and sometimes painted and sculpted from the same models. They were lifelong friends, and Murray often served as a model for Eakins's paintings and photography.
