CAPTAIN MONTGOMERY MEIGS BRONZE FIGURE OF A SNAKE, PROBABLY CAST FOR MEIGS AS A DOOR HANDLE FOR THE CAPITOL BUILDING, 1850'S According to Jennifer Blancata in her article, The Little-known History of the Capitol Bronze Shop (1855-1859), the ever resourceful supervising engineer, Captain Montgomery C. Meigs, established one of the few bronze foundries in America in order to cast bronze and decorative architectural elements for the Capitol extension, which was then under construction.
