Description:

CHARLES PICART LE DOUX
FRENCH, 1881-1959
A COUPLE FROM ARLES
Watercolor
Lower left monogrammed in plate; lower center: "Ch. Picart Le Doux"

Catalogue note: Picart-Le-Doux was born in Paris and studied at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts, where Gérôme was among his teachers. Encouraged by Renoir, he moved away from academic painting toward Impressionist landscapes, which he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1904 and other major Paris salons. He received the Grand Medal at the 1937 Exposition Internationale and was made an Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1950. Known for figure paintings—especially female nudes—and postwar landscapes of Paris, Touraine, and Provence, he also completed murals for the ocean liner Normandie and illustrated works by Verlaine, Baudelaire, and Colette. His works are in the Musée du Petit Palais and Musée National d'Art Moderne, as well as museums in Le Havre, Nice, Bagnols, and Moscow.
