CHINESE EXPORT STONEWARE WALL POCKET OF A DIVING HAWK molded with realistically incised plumage and painted and glazed highlights, the diving bird with head raised and wings slightly spread - h:10 in.

Provenance: A pair of hawks of similar appearance but in different poses were sold at Christie's New York, on January, 27, 20014. Sargent, The Copeland Collection, 1991, p. 146."

The Christie's catalogue goes on to state that there are a 'group of unglazed brown stoneware birds and animals, all very finely modeled and highlighted with white enamel dots, that may have been production of the Wuxi area where the famed Yixing kilns are.
