LARGE JAPANESE BRONZE KORO (CENSER), LATE EDO PERIOD (1615-1868), BY REPUTE FROM FAMILY OF COMMODORE MATTHEW C. PERRY (1794-1858) the ovoid tripod censer in Chinese ding form, the tall feet decorated in archaic Chinese designs and topped by Taotie masks, the round basin carved with tigers on rockery and a dragon among clouds, with tall loop handles and decorated with fretwork, the domed and pierced cover with a scholar finial - h:27.50 in.

Provenance: By repute from Commodore Matthew C. Perry (1794-1858) to his daughter, Sarah Perry Rodgers (1818-1905) and her husband Colonel Robert Smith Rodgers (1809-1891), son of Commodore John Rodgers (1772-1838); by descent to current owners, Sion Hill Estate, Havre de Grace, MD

The Potomack Company sold items from the Sion Hill Estate, home of Commodore John Rodgers (1772-1838), in February and April of 2019, including items from the Rodgers family, and from Quartermaster General Montgomery C. Meigs, who was married to Commodore John Rodgers' daughter, Louisa
